What is a Forensic Weather Analysis?

A forensic weather analysis is the process of reconstructing weather events for a certain time and location. It involves the application of meteorological knowledge and data analysis techniques to understand how weather factors may have contributed to or influenced the outcome of a particular event.

Forensic weather analysis is often conducted in legal cases, insurance claims, and investigations where weather conditions play a crucial role. 

The process of forensic weather analysis typically involves the following steps:

  1. Data Collection: includes data such as weather station records, radar imagery, satellite imagery, severe reports (hail, lightning, tornado), NWS warnings issued and any other available sources.
  2. Weather Reconstruction: Forensic Meteorologists use the collected data to reconstruct past weather conditions such as temperature, precipitation, wind speed/direction, atmospheric pressure and visibility.
  3. Impact Assessment: The CCM (Certified Consulting Meteorologist) evaluates the potential impact of the identified weather conditions on the event. 
  4. Reporting and Expert Testimony: The findings of the forensic weather analysis are compiled into a comprehensive report. In legal cases, forensic meteorologists may provide expert testimony in court to explain their meteorological finds, and the potential influence of weather on the event.
