Relentless U.S. Flash Floods Rewrite the Record Books

Quick Stats:

➤ Flash flooding is the deadliest weather peril, and also the most expensive. It costs 89 lives (a 30-year average) and over $180 billion per year in the United States.
Just this year so far: 3,822 flash flood warnings have been issued across the United States. 34 of those were catastrophic flood warnings (note, this includes continuations and upgrades from a base Flash Flood Warning).
➤ July alone saw 1,446 flash flood warnings issued across the U.S.

What Makes This July Different?
➤ The overall mean temperature was noticeably higher than normal this July for the United States, particularly in the Midwest and East. (Figure 2)
➤ When it gets hotter, more water turns into vapor - and not as much turns back into liquid. That means there’s more moisture hanging around in the air.
➤ With more moisture in the air, storms can produce more rainfall.

Note: Cooler-than-normal temperatures in the Southwest (Figure 2) were influenced by tropical moisture or burn scars.

➤ The amount of moisture for storms to use was notably higher in impacted areas (Figures 3 & 4).
➤ The total rainfall for these areas was much higher than the climatological “normal.”

➤ Within every noted location of devastating flooding, precipitation is notably above normal for the month of July (so far).

➤ As seen in Figure 4 above, atmospheric moisture during the month of July was above normal for much of the country, including all highlighted locations that experienced devastating flash flooding

➤ Above (Figure 5) is Monarch’s flood inundation estimate during the deadly and historic flooding in Kerrville, Texas on July 4–5, which tragically claimed the lives of over 130 people.

To Wrap Up This Banner Month: The anomalous conditions this July led to a month that won’t soon be forgotten. Elevated temperatures and increased moisture - fueled in part by two tropical systems - contributed to several overperforming storm systems.
