Crop Specific Forecasts for Commodity Trading

The Energy and Agriculture Divisions of the Virginia Tech Endowment Commodity Fund (COINS) was in need of weather modeling to better assist in trading and speculation. Crop-specific reports were developed and delivered via PDF reports to start, then into API delivery for input into the commodity trader’s in-house infrastructure/dashboard.

For agriculture application, the reports and data included weather, climate and crop-specific information (i.e. growing degree days) for specific crops in specific countries (ex: coffee beans in Vietnam). For the energy application, data included population weighted heating and cooling degree days.

With the API delivery method, the students created their own data visualizations. This included analysts working on analyzing and utilizing the data in a more predictive manner. The result of using Monarch’s weather data was better portfolio performance, promoting higher return on investments.
